Inhalt
The Mediterranean, a vibrant crossroads of cultures surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, transcends continental boundaries and holds a unique place in the Western imagination. Often romanticized as the cradle of civilization or framed as exotic, the region has long been a canvas for European projections of masculinity – virile, honor-bound, and steeped in tradition. This course challenges these portrayals. Drawing on Predrag Matvejevic's "Mediterranean Breviary," we'll explore the region's cultural fluidity and the diverse masculinities shaped within it. We'll examine how anthropological research navigates complex histories and power dynamics, using the concept of gatekeeping to understand how access to knowledge can be controlled.
We'll analyze how gender regimes in the Mediterranean uphold notions of family honor, patriarchal authority, and emotional restraint. Yet, these masculinities are constantly challenged by social change, including feminist movements, LGBTQ+ activism, and younger generations pushing against traditional norms.
Readings will include classic and contemporary anthropological works, theoretical essays, and potentially first-hand ethnographic accounts. Let's Change the Narrative and unpack the complexities of gender and power.
The course is organized into four parts (two-weekend seminars):
Part 1: Mediterranean as Imaginary and European Writing (Block 1)
Part 2: Classical Mediterranean Anthropologies and Conceptual Gatekeeping (Block 1)
Part 3: Gender Regimes and Masculinities Across Regions and History (Block 2)
Part 4: Activism, Violence, Populism, Empathy and Contemporary Mediterranean Ethnographies (Block 2)
